Fight night or Phang Nga Bay?

A Muay Thai evening at Khao Lak's stadium or a longtail day to James Bond Island: what each fills, who each suits, and the order that lets you do both.

Quick answer

Do both if you have the time, because they fill different parts of the day. The fight night is an evening at the stadium that you reach on your own; the Phang Nga Bay trip is a guided day of about eight hours with pickup from your Khao Lak hotel. If you can only choose one, pick the bay for scenery and an easy family day, and the fights for live sport and atmosphere. Book them on different dates so a late finish never comes before an early pickup.

The short answer

These two outings rarely compete for the same hours. The Muay Thai card is an evening activity, two nights a week, in an air-conditioned hall. The longtail trip across Phang Nga Bay takes up the whole day, starts with a pickup from your hotel and ends back there. Most visitors with a week on the coast can fit both. The real question is which one to keep if you only have room for one, and the answer depends on whether you came for the scenery or for the sport.

What the fight night gives you

An evening card of Muay Thai bouts at Khao Lak's own stadium, with Thai and international fighters and the wai khru ritual before each fight. You choose a standard seat or a ringside seat, which comes with one beer; food and other drinks are paid for inside. You reach the stadium under your own steam, by taxi or songthaew, and get back the same way. It is loud, close and full-contact, and some fighters will be teenagers. Under-sixes go free, and older children pay a child rate.

What the longtail day gives you

About eight hours with an English-speaking guide, starting with a pickup from your Khao Lak hotel. You cross Phang Nga Bay in a traditional longtail boat, paddle a short way among the limestone rocks by canoe, and land at Khao Phing Kan, the island known as James Bond Island, with the rock spike of Ko Ta Pu just offshore. Lunch is at a restaurant in Koh Panyi, a floating Muslim village, and the day ends at the Suwan Khuha cave temple with its reclining golden Buddha and resident monkeys. The temple entry fee is included.

Time and energy

The bay trip is the bigger commitment. The operator confirms your pickup time after booking, and the day runs about eight hours, with time on the water, a short canoe, walking at the stops and the road transfers at each end. The fight night asks for an evening and a late bedtime rather than an early start. If you are travelling with young children or simply want to keep effort low, the bay can feel long, while the fights end late. Split them across your stay rather than putting them back to back.

Weather and season

Khao Lak has a dry season from November to April and a monsoon from May to October, when westerly winds bring strong waves to the coast. Weather matters far more on the bay, where the itinerary may change in bad conditions, than at the stadium, which is indoors and air-conditioned. In the monsoon months, keep the fight night as a fixed plan and treat the bay as the outing to move if the forecast turns. In the dry season either works, and the choice is down to interest.

Who each suits

Neither outing is better in general; they suit different travellers, and the split is usually clear once you know what you want from the day. The fights reward curiosity about the sport and a taste for a loud room late in the evening. The bay rewards an early start with scenery, a guided day and lunch arranged for you. Use the lists below as a quick sorting guide, then check the restrictions further down before you book.

  • Fight night: sport fans, groups of friends, couples after a lively evening
  • Fight night: visitors with only evenings free
  • The bay: families, photographers and first-time visitors to the Andaman coast
  • The bay: anyone who wants a guided day with lunch arranged

Phang Nga Bay in brief

Phang Nga Bay covers about 400 square kilometres of the Andaman Sea between the island of Phuket and the mainland. An extensive section of it has been protected since 1981 as Ao Phang Nga National Park, and in 2002 the bay was listed as a Ramsar wetland of international importance, with mangroves, seagrass beds and coral reefs. Limestone cliffs with caves rise from its shallow water, and some of its archaeological sites carry paintings more than a thousand years old.

About James Bond Island

The name belongs to a pair of limestone karsts. Khao Phing Kan, Thai for hills leaning against each other, is the island you land on; Ko Ta Pu is the 20-metre spike of rock about 40 metres off its shore. Both became known as James Bond Island after the 1974 film The Man with the Golden Gun used Khao Phing Kan as the villain's base. They are part of Ao Phang Nga National Park, and since 1998 boats have been kept from approaching Ko Ta Pu too closely, to protect the rock from erosion.

A third option: Cheow Lan Lake

If you have a second free day, the inland alternative is Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok National Park, the reservoir held back by the Ratchaprapha Dam in Surat Thani province. The day trip from Khao Lak includes a swim in a forest creek, a boat across the lake to its limestone pillars, a cave visited by headlamp and a Thai lunch, with the park fee and pickup covered. Khao Sok is among Thailand's wettest regions, so pack for rain whatever the season.

Who this isn't for

Leave out the fight night if teenage fighters, blood or knockdowns would spoil your evening, or if you need to come and go, since re-entry may not be allowed. The bay trip is not suitable for pregnant travellers, people with back problems or wheelchair users, and it involves canoeing and walking at each stop. The lake day carries the same warnings for pregnancy and back problems and is not suitable for people over 80. If none of these fits, the transfer card at least makes arrival easy.

Fitting both into a stay

A simple order works for most trips. Arrive, settle in and keep the first evening quiet. Do the bay on a clear day early in your stay, while the forecast is good, and put the fight night on one of its two weekly nights later on, ideally with a lazy morning to follow. If you have the energy for a third outing, add the lake on another day. All three bookings carry the same safety net through GetYourGuide: nothing is lost if you call one off at least a day before.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do the bay trip and the fights on the same day?

It is possible, but tiring: the bay takes about eight hours and the fight card runs late. Most visitors are happier with them on different days.

Which is better for children?

The bay, for most families: a guided day with lunch, a boat and a canoe. The fights suit older children who are comfortable with full-contact sport.

Does either include pickup from my Khao Lak hotel?

The bay trip does, from your Khao Lak hotel. The fight night does not; you go directly to the stadium by taxi, car or songthaew.

What if it rains?

The stadium is indoors and air-conditioned, so the fights go ahead in any weather. The bay itinerary may change in bad weather.

Is James Bond Island crowded?

It is one of the best-known stops in Phang Nga Bay, so expect other boats and visitors at Khao Phing Kan.

Can I cancel either booking?

Yes. All three can be called off through GetYourGuide without charge until a day beforehand.
